A Profiling Float System for the Arctic Ocean

Abstract

To develop and deploy floats along the margin and interior of the Canada Basin. The floats will observe the pathways and evolution of Pacific Summer Water as it enter and mixes into the beafufort Gyre and its relationship to the sea ice cover. This proposal is to develop and deploy profiling floats along the margin and interior of the Canada Basin. The floats will observe the pathways and evolution of Pacific Summer Water as it enters and mixes into the Beaufort Gyre and its relationship to the sea ice cover. Temperature and salinity profile data are essential to understanding the stratified ocean dynamics in the Arctic. The profiling floats will be equipped with an ice avoidance algorithm that will help them survive in the harsh Arctic environment.
