Scientific Upgrades for R/V Thomas G Thompson 2016

Abstract

Funds are provided to upgrade the scientific capabilities of the ONR research vessel Thomas G Thompson. Capabilities include a continuity, temperature and depth rosette, a robotic radiometer system, and an ultra-short baseline transceiver. This proposal is submitted with the intent of upgrading the scientific capabilities of Research Vessel Thomas G Thompson. R/V Thompson is owned by the Office of Naval Research and is operated by the University of Washington under Charter Party Agreement with ONR. The vessel supports oceanographic research conducted by numerous scientists similarly to other vessels that comprise the University National Oceanographic Laboratory Systems (UNOLS) fleet. This includes research sponsored by the Office of Naval Research as well as other important entities such as NASA, NOAA, USGS, the University of Washington, and the University of Victoria. In this proposal the University of Washington proposes to further upgrade the capabilities of R/V Thompson procuring and installing new systems. These systems include: • CTD (continuity, temperature & depth) rosette o Replaces the 20+ year old unit currently used onboard and provides redundancy of this critical oceanographic research capability • Robotic Radiometer System o Provides the ability to take, record and report sea service skin temperatures while the ship is underway • Ultra-Short Baseline Transceiver, Pole & Instrument Well o Adds the capability to more effectively and safely communicate with underwater vehicles, instrumentation and positioning systems. • Science Data and Computer Network Refurbishment o Upgrades R/V Thompson’s aging science data and computer network so as to ensure effectiveness and efficiency of this critical infrastructure into the foreseeable future including: §? Computer equipment rack upgrades §? Network equipment upgrades §? Ethernet cable network upgrades §? Fiber optic cable network upgrades §? Virtual Machine Server upgrades §? WiFi Distribution System upgrades
