Utilization of a Global Network of Ionospheric Imagers to Combat Degradation of Communications Vital to the Naval Mission

Abstract

Funds are provided to conduct research to investigate the use of state-of-the-art all-sky-imagers to investigate ionospheric disturbances that impact radio communications and navigation. The PI will use a 13- site network to investigate the linkage between the northern and southern hemispheres with instruments placed at opposite ends of the Earth~s regional magnetic field lines. The objective is to develop a first ever capability for ground-based optical instruments to predict strategically important conditions in area-denied locations. The investigations will offer technical approaches to the specification and possible mitigation of space weather impacts upon radio communications and navigation systems.
