DMON Portable Range
Abstract
This proposal is for the development of marine mammal monitoring technology that will enable (1) detection and localization of different species of interest to the Navy through the use of multiple moored receivers with accurate and synchronized clocks, and (2) long-term acoustic recording of wide variety of marine mammal species. The objective is to create a low-cost portable acoustic range that will allow detection and localization after the moorings are collected, and optionally, in real-time by transmitting precisely time-stamped detections via an integrated acoustic modem. Because of design similarities between the portable acoustic range and acoustic recorders, the project will also develop an autonomous acoustic recorder based on the DMON, with flexible sampling schemes, duty cycles, and hydrophone options. Development activities proposed here will focus on integration of these components into a unique portable range and an autonomous recorder that can be used for a variety of science and mitigation applications.
