High Power Microwave Characterization Instrumentation for Solid-State Materials

Abstract

The proposed studies, realized through the combination of this DURIP request and present ONRfunding, are driven primarily by the desire to develop and demonstrate solid-state materials andmechanisms that can be used to counter HPM SEEs while still allowing low power radio frequencyelectromagnetic waves to transit a radome. The scope of the basic science to be studied focuses oncontrolling the transmissivity of solid-state materials above/below some microwave power densityor electric- or magnetic-field value. To meet the applied goal of the above referenced work, wewill measure/demonstrate the frequency dependent and E-field (and H-field) dependenttransmission of thin/thick films as well as measure the complex permittivity, permeability andconductivity; these values will be used as feedback mechanisms to improve the desired appliedresponse (i.e., alter the microscopic properties of the fabricated materials).
