High-Speed Camera used with Large Parabolic Mirrors to Produce High-Quality Flow Visualization

Abstract

The purpose of this proposal is to request funding to acquire a new high-speed camera andtwo larger parabolic mirrors to create a state of the art flow visualization system to be installed inthe GTRI Jet Flow Diagnostics Facility (JFDF). This new system is expected to improve theexisting schlieren flow visualization capability at GTRI currently being used for an ONR Contract(N00421-15-C-0003) to understand noise of supersonic heated jets issuing from multi-streamnozzles. The requested equipment will help understand the physics of crackle in supersonic jetsformed as a result of soundwave coalescence. Likewise, it will allow accurate calculation ofconvection Mach number of turbulent eddies in high speed jets.
