DURIP: Synthesis of Very-High Temperature Superconductors via Non-Equilibrium Phase Diagram Routes

Abstract

SOWFunds are provided to purchase an add on heat capacity measurement capability, a diamond saw for sample prep and an energy and wavelength dispersive analysis addition to the existing electron microscope.ObjectiveThe objective is to provide additional sample analysis tools useful in his search for higher temperature superconductors. The heat capcity system is especially important because different kinds of transitions have different heat capacity signatures.ApproachThe approach is to survey the cots lab instrument world and make cost sensitive selections, order and install.Merit / RelevanceHigher temperature superconductors could have strong energy efficiency impacts if they prove of engineering usefulness. But first we have to find them and hints seen so far suggest they will not be found among simple compounds. Hence subtle tools to separate the phases and possible interface effects are essential.
