R/V Oceanus ONR 2016 Shiptime Proposal

Abstract

Funds are provided to the Oregon State University for ship time support of Navy oceanographic research projects in 2016. The National Science Foundation-?owned research vessel Oceanus has been successfully operated by Oregon State University (OSU) since 2012. The vessel has been operated throughout the Pacific Basin in support of a wide variety of science research projects sponsored by the NSF and the U.S. Navy. Oceanus was chosen for much of this work due to the vessel’s operational versatility and economic efficiency combined with it ability to work both close to shore and transit great distances. In an era of tightening budgets and constrained resources, these characteristics have proven valuable to the broader UNOLS sea going research community by providing a platform from which to complete missions previously reserved for larger vessels that require significantly more budget to operate. The 2016 calendar year will mark the fifth year that OSU will operate Oceanus in the Pacific Region. Though tradeoffs were made with the retirement of Wecoma, OSU will continue to build on the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution’s long history of productive operations using Oceanus. Work in 2016 will help scientists better understand the trophic interactions along the Aleutian Island chain as well as the influences of environmental factors on organismal distributions in the offshore region of Southern California. Other studies will increase knowledge of ocean chemistry and other physical characteristics that will add to the body of knowledge around such varied topics as climate change and underwater sound propagation. ONR funded work on the Oceanus in CY2016 consists of a single, 4-?day cruise supporting Dr. Jim Moum. This cruise will primarily focus on readying sophisticated instrumentation that Dr. Moum is developing for a future cruise in CY2017. This cruise will be crucial to ensuring that these instruments are ready for the extend cruise planned for the subsequent year.
