THIS GRANT IS A CONTINUATION OF N00014-14-1-0628 Fundamental Dynamic Contact Failure Mechanisms in Granular Materials

Abstract

The funds are for Dr. Wayne Chen. The research seeks to visualize the dynamic failure processes in granular materials under dynamic compression in real time using a recently developed high-speed synchrotron X-ray imaging technique. The particles under investigation will start from a pair, then an array, and eventually a 2-D matrix. The dynamic damage initiation and propagation processes will be recorded by a high-speed camera, together with the corresponding loading histories. The quantitative information will then be analyzed and modeled to develop failure criteria for the granular materials under dynamic compression.
