The Topology of Force Production in Unsteady Flow Around Swept Wings

Abstract

This joint proposal will study the axial, vertical, and lateral gust responses over a generic swept-wing (finite span 45deg swept NACA0012 and sharp LE configurations) body at Re=10,000 and 500,000. The experiments will acquire time-resolved 3D flow fields, extracted pressure, force, and moment data on a model performing analogous surge, pitch and yaw motions in an optical towing tank facility. Comprehensive Eulerian and Lagrangian analyses will be employed to reveal the full unsteady 3D flow structure topology, and will result in a description of how pressure/force distributions and moments depend on interactions with various gust waveforms.
