Coupled Atomic Force and Apertured IR Scanning Near-Field Optical Microscopy (SNOM) for Simultaneous

Abstract

Funds are provide to construct an instrument for coupled and simultaneous imaging of chemical differentiation and morphology along with quantitative thermo-mechanical characterization of heterogeneous materials with nano-scale resolution. Two issues related to the materials exposed to very high strain rate, high pressure, localized loadings (such as in cavitating flows) will be addressed using the proposed coupled microscopy technique: (1) The molecular nature of damage and (2) Thermo-mechanical characterization of different phases and the inter-phase regions.
