Physical Oceanographic Studies of the New England Continental Shelf in Conjunction with the Seabed Characterization Experiment

Abstract

This research grant will fund the purchase, preparation, and operation of instrumentation for the collection and analysis of oceanographic data. These data will support of the ONR sponsored Seabed Characterization Experiment scheduled for spring 2017. The PI will conduct high-resolution hydrographic surveys using a towed sensor and autonomous underwater vehicles to characterize the ocean along the main acoustic transmission paths. In addition to preparing and operating the survey platforms, the PI will prepare and deploy thermistor string moorings that will collect data for the duration of the experiment. Three Workhorse Sentinel 300 kHz Acoustic Doppler Current Profilers (ADCP) will be purchased and deployed to measure ocean currents during the experiment. The measured data will be analyzed to resolve oceanographic processes that affect acoustic processes. The PI will collaborate with acousticians to support the overall goals of the experiment which are focused on seabed characterization.
