Seabed Characterization Experiment Survey 2016 and Main Experiment 2017 in the New England Mud Patch
Abstract
The PI will provide oversight and planning for the ONR sponsored Seabed Characterization Experiments in the New England Mud Patch. The PI wil participate in a coring cruise with partners in FY2017 and use the data for purposes of planning the 2017 main experiment. In addition to planning the main 2017 experiment, the PI will oversee fabrication and mobilization of a 52 element L-array (32 on the horizontal section, and 20 on the vertical section) andan autonomous underwater recording system (SWAMI) to record acousticsignals at the experimental site. The PI will also provide a source for acoustic propagation experiments. Several specific experiments will be carried out during the main event: 1) circular source tows to determine cross mode or verical mode coherence; 2) modal propagation experiments to resolve loss mechansims such as absorption or coupled modes; 3) Persistant/repeated sampling of a propagation path over many days to derive statistic for inversion analysis. Data collected as part of the experiment will be made available to all participants in the trial.
