Abstract

This is a 3-year proposal. Funds are provided to perform the following tasks:(FY14) The application of interest and the overall deterministic problem formulation will be defined in the first year, including single and multi-objective design optimization problem. The activities will focus on development, extension and testing of tools for deterministic and stochastic SBD. Research space for shape optimization will be assessed using KLE and nonlinear techniques by a joint IIHR and CNR-INSEAN effort. Optimization algorithms will be enhanced and tested on selected problems by CNRINSEAN, in order to define the most effective approach. Development and testing will be conducted for dynamic meta-models and efficient sampling techniques for UQ, under IIHR lead. (FY15) The second year will focus on deterministic application of the methodologies achieved in the first year by all partners. Specifically, reduced-dimensionality research space will be made available to the enhanced optimization algorithms. Inverse problem formulation will be used to define deterministic optimization objectives and constraints. Practical deterministic multiobjective optimization problem will be solved for added resistance and propulsion performance.(FY16) The activities of the third year will focus on the application of the SBD framework to the stochastic problem, facing a real ocean operating scenario. The inverse problem formulation will be extended to stochastic quantities. UQ will be performed within reliability-based robust design optimization (RBRDO) using dynamic meta-models and efficient sampling techniques. Single and multi-objective optimization will be solved and selected results will be tested with experiments.
