Development and Adoption of Hybrid Additive Manufacturing Technology for Naval Systems

Abstract

This is a Defense University Research Instrumentation Program (DURIP) for acquisition and installation of a hybrid processing system incorporating integrated additive and subtractive manufacturing techniques for U.S. Navy and Department of Defense applications. This equipment will enhance current ONR research efforts, create important new research directions relevant to DoD interests, enable the manufacturing of large, complex Naval components, and provide educational opportunities for both current and future scientists and engineers in the AM field. The equipment will be ideally located at the Penn State Applied Research Laboratory, which is a U.S. Navy University Affiliated Research Center and the DARPA Additive Manufacturing Demonstration Facility for Open Manufacturing. This purchase is leveraged by $100,000 in matching funds from the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agancy (DARPA) Open Manufacturing program.
