Mentor-Pal: Growing STEM Pipelines with Personalized Dialogs with Virtual STEM Professionals

Abstract

ITPR#140152University Research Initiatives (URI) The primary objective of this project is to recruit, engage and retain early career STEM undergraduate students through a series of data-centric courses and research experiences that will prepare them for careers in fields critical to maintaining national security. Our novel curriculum will focus on the collection, analysis, interpretation and communication of data. We will use high-impact multidimensional interventions and pedagogical best practices to facilitate and support student learning. University faculty will deliver the curriculum and be provided with training and support for active learning classrooms to ensure the sustainability of the course and the integrity of the pedagogy. A modular design of the courses and individual activities will allow for the portability of the curriculum to different geographic regions, with the possibility of scaling the content to different educational levels (e.g., secondary school through graduate school).
