Foam Core Sandwich Panels for Underwater Blast Protection

Abstract

Energy dissipation in polymer foam-core sandwich panels subjected to underwater explosion is multi-axial and involve transverse isotropy, viscoplasticity, damage and hysteresis. Specific objectives in this research are to (1) perform experiments and develop new foam material models and (2) expand fluid-solid interaction sandwich panel analysis with these foam models. Experiments are performed on Arcan foam specimens enclosed in a pressure chamber and subjected to cyclic loading.
