Engineering Exploratorium (EngX): A STEM Outreach Program
Abstract
Engineering Exploratorium (EngX) is an annual event with two complementary objectives:1) increase the number of high school students who pursue STEM degrees with military relevance, and2) increase the number of undergraduates who pursue military careers. The event is comprised of a series of hands-on activities inspired by key military applications. The activities and experiments are led by current undergraduates and members of the military, providing opportunities for interaction and informal discussion between members of the military and current undergraduates and high school students. The event leaders will receive formal training on the underlying principles and engineering of the activities. The University of Southern California is located in the heart of Los Angeles and a partnership with the USC Veterans Affairs Center and the USC Naval ROTC program will ensure that uniformed, civilian, active duty, and retired members of the Navy will be directly involved with the program, benefiting from the STEM training on the different experiments. The efficacy of the program will be evaluated by determining the effect of the event on the participants~ and the volunteers~ knowledge about STEM careers in the military and their motivation to pursue these careers. The long-term strategic vision for financial sustainability is focused on establishing industry partners through a collaboration with the USC Corporate & Foundations Relations Office.
