Next generation sound and movement tags for behavioural studies on whales

Abstract

The goal of this project is to continue development towards field readiness of long-term sound and movement tags and supporting analysis tools. Although the primary taxonomic objective is cetaceans, tags for this taxon require a combination of capabilities which will take time to integrate successfully. To reduce risk, the proposed work will exploit two parallel and synergistic development platforms: the SMRT tag for cetaceans and the DTAG-4 for seals. Extant attachment and recovery solutions for seals greatly simplify the design of the DTAG-4 and deployments of this tag in FY16, funded by other sources, will yield an immediate source of long-term data for developing analysis tools for verifying performance fo the closely related S/M board in the SMRT tag. The proposed project encompasses three tasks: the prototype SMRT tag; software for in situ processing and tools for long-term tag data analysis; and support field deployments of the prototype SMRT tags and examine the data to identify any problems and help in fine-tuning the in situ processing software.
