Vibracore collection and sedimentary analysis: Characterization of NE mud patch
Abstract
This research grant supports the PI to collect sediment samples with a vibracore unit in the New England Mud Patch are of the Atlantic Ocean south of Martha s Vineyard. THe PI will work with USGS to plan a core sampling cruise from the R/V Endeavor scheduled for April 2016. THe PI will collect vibracores within a predetermined region of the mud patch to target important sedimentary strata that could be accessable with 20 cores. The PI and assistants will conduct a grain size analysis on subsamples of the collected cores at the USGS facility in Woods Hole. The PI will collaborate with other project scientist to formulate a 3-D geoacoustic model of the surveyed area based on CHIRP, multibeam bathymetry and backscatter, and core analyses. The resulting interpretation/analysis will be shared with other project scientists and presented at scientific workshops/conferences and published in peer reviewed journals.
