2nd UMD Workshop on Distributed Sensing, Actuation, and Control for Bio-inspired Soft Robotics

Abstract

Funding is requested for partial support of the 2nd UMD Workshop on Distributed Sensing, Actuation, and Control for Bio-inspired Soft Robotics at the University ofMaryland, College Park, MD, tentatively scheduled for October 3, 2016. The workshop will bring together about scientists, mathematicians, and engineers from a range of STEM disciplines (e.g., neurobiology, applied mathematics, and control theory) for discussions on the fundamental challenges of distributed sensing, actuation, and control of hyperelastic continua. The workshop will last one day and include a combination ofshort talks, breakout discussions, and a social event. Despite previous funding, the engineering leverage of neurophysiology research in representative organisms such the octopus has been superficial. There is a need for a control theoretic abstraction of the neuromechanics that leverages the intrinsic dynamics of infinite-dimensional flexible structures. The workshop will emphasize working discussions on the cutting-edge openresearch questions ~ rather than research presentations on the state-of-the-art. The meeting will bring together researchers from engineering and biological perspectives, academia and government. Funds are requested to defray the expenses of participantswho will be presenting invited and contributed talks. No catering funds are requested.
