18th IMS New Researchers Conference
Abstract
Objective:There are several main objectives for the conference. First and foremost, it is a forum for the new cohort of statistics researchers to get to know each other. Second, the conference encourages junior researchers to consider all of the important facets of our profession. The vast majority of the junior participants are tenure-track faculty within a few years of PhD. There are many jobs that are required of faculty (beyond their training in research). This conference hosts 5 panel discussions of senior researchers that are meant to mentor junior researchers in these endeavors. The discussion panels are:(1 ) publishing,(2 ) finding funding(3 ) mentoring,(4 ) bio data science, from the trenches, and(5 ) finding collaborators,T he vast majority of these researchers have not met before, yet they will be working together as Statisticians in various organizations in the future. By combining both junior and senior researchers, this conference strengthens our field s research.Approach:The funds will be used for lodging, transportation, and food. It will be hosted at UW Madison in our new Discovery Building. Senior researchers who have agreed to attend include: Tianxi Cai (Harvard), Jerry Friedman (Stanford), David Dunson (Duke), Martin Wainwright (Berkeley), Richard Davis (Columbia), Michael Newton (UW Madison), Ming Yuan (UW Madison), and Grace Wahba (UW Madison).ONR Mission/Relevance:The proposed conference addresses the core ONR mission of planning, fostering, and encouraging scientificresearch. Of course, research comes from researchers and junior researchers need specialized mentoring to enable their future research. By bringing junior researchers together with senior faculty, we help to foster their research.
