Large Field-of-View and Time-Resolved Acoustic Velocimetry Imaging (AVI) tool for Aeroacoustic

Abstract

1For Public ReleaseProject Title: Large Field~of~View and Time~Resolved Acoustic Velocimetry Imaging (AVI)tool for AeroacousticAbstract:At the heart of this proposal is the development of a new diagnostic tool for advancing thestate~of~the~art in noninstrusive acoustic sensing. This new technique, dubbed ~AcousticVelocimetry Imaging~ has undergone rapid development since 2014 by researchers at TheApplied Research Laboratories at The University of Texas at Austin (ARL:UT) and TheNational Center for Physical Acoustics (NCPA) at The University of Mississippi. AVI isunique in that it combines established shadowgraph (or schlieren) diagnostic tools withrobust analytical methods to quantify the acoustic velocity over large spatial fields and asfunctions of time. Unlike classical acoustic sensing techniques, which employ intrusivecondenser type microphones, AVI can be used to quantify the sound field in harshenvironments and without the ambiguity concerning the location of the aeroacousticsources of noise. This is especially important in close vicinity to the turbulence / acousticfieldinterface where the evanescent and radiative components of the pressure field aredifficult to separate. Thus, AVI has the potential for addressing a number of outstandingissues concerning the vibroacoustic loads that form from jet and rocket noise, rotorcraftnoise from BVI, as well as explosives testing, and at a substantial reduction in cost. Inorder to progress the development of this new diagnostic tool, ARL:UT is requesting fundsto purchase the necessary hardware to build a state~of~the~art high~speed, Stereoscopic~Acoustic Velocimetry Imaging system in order for researchers to pave the way in advancingthe state~of~the~art in non~intrusive acoustic sensing.
