Marine Energy Converter Modeling for Navy Applications

Abstract

The Northwest National Marine Renewable Energy Center (NNMREC) at the University of Washington is currently developing several types of Marine and Hydrokinetic (MHK) energy converters for field testing in Puget Sound, WA. Two specific energy turbines can be used to harness the energy in ocean, tidal, or river currents, using axial-flow and cross-flow geometries.Field testing of these systems will demonstrate their performance capabilities and enable the evaluation of advanced control methods. This proposal is to develop models of these field-ready systems to support future MHK projects and/or potential use of these technologies in expeditionary applications.
