Damage Tolerance of Assessment of Sandwich Structures in Naval Vessels Operating in Arctic Regions

Abstract

The influence of mode-III and mixed-mode I/II/III conditions, highly transient and fatigue loading scenarios as well as ice impact events on typical naval type GFRP/PVC foam cored sandwich panels will be investigated experimentally and numerically in terms of face/core debond size and shape propagaton through development of new fracture mechanical characterization test methods, as well as structural component tests and analysis methods for arctic temperature conditions. Based on this fundamental knowledge, test and analysis methods and conducted fracture mechanical measurements, a damage assessment scheme for naval vessels operating in arctic conditions will be proposed.
