Adaptive Surveillance Radar System for Detecting Object with Obscure Features

Abstract

Research to develop innovative multifunctional adaptive radar. The focus application is hidden object detection with obscure features, motivated by the need for new approaches to quickly and accurately search object in various scenarios, such as searching buried people in a battle field or on a disaster site, discovering and imaging hidden objects behind walls, below ground surface, in foliage, etc. We propose to purchase equipment that will play key enabling roles in our research. Specifically, two major items will be purchased: 1). ARA antenna positioner and polarization rotator. 2). Keysight N5227A PNA microwave network Analyzer. The instrumentation will serve three main purposes: 1). Enable smart antenna, phased array antenna, radar and other RF and microwave device/systems functional characterization and electromagnetic compatibility (EMC) test. 2). Enable high accuracy wafer or die level radar and communication integrated circuit test measurements. 3). Serve as educational tools for both graduate and undergraduate engineering student research and development in areas of microwave and RF electronics, sensor and sensing system, computational electromagnetics, and telecommunication. These instruments can interface very well with existing facilities at the University of Vermont (UVM), and can significantly enhance both radio frequency and microwave research and educational activities presently underway. In order to leverage the impact and benefit to other researchers and educators, these instruments will be made accessible to other higher education institutions in Vermont in order to develop and further researchcollaborations.
