The Role of Dynamic Representational Networks in Expertise in Visual Scene Recognition

Abstract

The goal of the project is to elucidate the mechanisms underlying the acquisition of multiple domains of scene expertise and to establish the importance of changes in structure and dynamics of neural representations over multiple spatiotemporal scales as novel markers of expertise. To achieve this goal, the PI will perform a series of behavioral and neuroimaging experiments in which na~ve participants will undergo intensive long-term training in scene recognition, with neural and behavioral data collected at multiple time points throughout the training. The training will span a variety of DoD-relevant domains and task contexts, including imagery analysis, scene navigation, and target detection, which will allow the PI to test the flexibility and generalizability of expertise in scene recognition. Successful completion of the proposed study is expected to provide a firm neurocognitive framework for the development of effective training regimens for visual scene analysis.Across the three-year period of performance, this research will attempt to develop: (1) A comprehensive characterization of the relationship between increasing experience in scene recognition and the formation of specific neural signatures of expertise. (2) A compact set of neural-behavioral indicators for predicting expertise in various domains of scene analysis. (3) Novel, neuroscientifically grounded training paradigms for optimizing performance in imagery analysis and visual navigation. (4) An understanding of whether/how individual differences in visuo-spatial abilities predict which subjects will benefit from scene analysis training.
