Regionally Enhanced Global (REG) 4D-VAR

Abstract

Funds are provided to conduct research to develop a novel data assimilation technique that prepares the global and mesoscale analyses by a single process. Under a previous effort, the PI has focused on improving the only the global analyses and forecasts. The current version of that system is called regionally enhanced global (REG) 4D-Var. The verification results for the global forecasts initiated from REG 4D-Var analyses are very promising, and indicate a clear direction for the further improvement of a system that covers the mesoscale as well. This project will focus on the implementation of a new technique for a prototype system. It will also assess the atmospheric dynamical processes whose representation in the model forecasts is improved due to the use of REG 4D-Var. These activities will be carried out in close collaboration with applied researchers at the NRL Marine Meteorology Division. The numerical experiments will be carried out on NRL and Department of Defense High Performance Computing Modernization Program (HPCMP) computers
