Development of Robust and Unifying Parameterizations of Turbulent Mixing in Oceanic Flows

Abstract

The main objectives are: (1) to investigatefundamental flow physics and mixing in canonical turbulent flows ranging from simplehomogeneous flows to boundary layer turbulent flows; (2) to develop and test diagnostic modelsthat may be used to provide a prognosis of the turbulent mixing using basic hydrographicmeasurements in the ocean (e.g. conductivity-depth-temperature (CTD) measurements) and (3) toformulate and test higher-order closure schemes that will provide the needed fidelity in bothdetailed process study models and regional/global circulation models.
