Fundamental Understanding of Molten Pool Physical Processes for Defect Formation and Surface Finish in Direct

Abstract

The proposed research will address the need for accurate control of the microstructures, and thus mechanical properties, generated during additive manufacturing and the dimensional accuracy and quality control of components produced by Direct Digital Manufacturing for the Navy. The approach of the proposed research is to couple the molten pool physics with neural net algorithms based on real-time process sensing to control the additive manufacturing process and achieve real-time modification of processing parameters to ensure the desired microstructural, geometric, and mechanical characteristics of an Additive Manufacturing (AM) component.
