Large Scale Seawater Facility for the Development of Ship Hull Grooming

Abstract

This proposal is to continue research that is being conducted to design, develop and deploy agrooming tool to proactively keep ship hulls in a smooth and fouling free condition. The research may be divided into four main tasks.~ Maintain the large scale seawater test site as an open facility for testing andevaluating vehicles, equipment, software and methodologies related to grooming~ Evaluate the effectiveness of grooming to maintain ship hull coatings in a smooth andfouling free condition.~ Investigate the mechanisms and performance of vertically rotating brushes inrelation to grooming performance, suction forces developed between the brush andthe surface and power required to power the system.~ Integrate the grooming tool with the SeaBotix remotely controlled vehicle.
