Characterizing along- and cross-channel variability in optical and acoustic backscatter during USRS using AUVs

Abstract

We propose to measure spatial and temporal variability in optical and acoustic backscatter in the estuarine environment and relate measured variability to the principle forcing variables of the estuary (river flow, tidal mixing, stratification). Variability in backscatter will be measured using sensors mounted on two REMUS-100 AUVs. We will implement adaptive sampling methods in the AUVs to advance autonomous sampling of estuarine environments. We will specifically target measurements within tidal fronts, internal hydraulic jumps, estuarine turbidity maximum (ETMs), and other dominant estuarine features in a variety of river systems subject to different forcing conditions encountered during the USRS project.
