THIS GRANT IS A CONTINUATION OF N00014-13-1-0881 - Critical Mass (Midwest Association for Science and Service)
Abstract
Exercise Option 3 per grant agreement.Critical MASS is a five-year, $2 million pilot project between the City of Chicago and the Department of the Navy to build a unique and groundbreaking collaboration in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) education for the students of the Chicago Public Schools (CPS) centered on project-based learning. Through Critical MASS, the City, Navy, CPS, and City Colleges of Chicago (CCC) will collaborate to implement a variety of STEM enrichment activities and programs, stretching from ninth grade through an Associate s Degree, aimed at broadening exposure to Naval STEM skills and careers, better equipping Chicago s youth with the STEM skills necessary to pursue STEM coursework in high school and in post-secondary, and attracting youth to Naval and other STEM-related careers. Critical MASS will build a bridge between the disadvantaged academic backgrounds of students traditionally underrepresented in STEM careers and their potential ambitions to pursue degrees in STEM-related disciplines. The pilot project will also provide the Department of the Navy and City of Chicago design and development opportunities to set the stage for a national STEM collaboration model that can be replicated by cities nation-wide.
