Tools and training to enhance capacity for analyzing high-resolution tag data

Abstract

Currently the most comprehensive and authoritative set of tools for high resolution tag data are a set of Matlab scripts developed by Mark Johnson and others and freely available. We propose to build on this foundation, retaining the quality of the tools and their compatibility with all versions of the DTAG, but expanding their range of functionality in several ways. First we will enhance the tools to enable their use with other tag types. We also proposal to expand the tag software by developng new visualization and statistical tools critically needed for exploring and extracting information from dense mult-sensor tag data. In tandem we plan to improve the documentation of the tools, creating detailed help files for each tool as well as a complete user guide, complementing these with a short course to train researchers in the use and analysis of high-resolution tags. Finally, although the current Matlab tools are freely available, Matlab requires a costly license. We would like to create complete, additional versions of the tools in freely available software to allow researchers to focus limited budgets on scientific output rather than proprietary software. The development of this freely available, fully documented tool kit will enable high-quality, reproducible, sophisticated analyses of tag data, while also facilitating comparison of results between studies, tag-types and computational software.
