Interfacial Hydration and Marine Antifouling

Abstract

In this research, all the measurements using SFG spectrometers will be performed in thePI~s lab at the University of Michigan. The polymer materials will be ordered by the PI~s groupor provided by various collaborators. For example, the control polymers and some of thezwitterionic and mixed charged polymer materials will be purchased by the PI~s group. Somezwitterionic and mixed charged polymers will be provided by Prof. Shaoyi Jiang~s group at theUniversity of Washington. The amphiphilic polymers will be provided by Prof. Chris Ober~sgroup at Cornell University, Prof. Rachel Segalman~s group at the University of California atSanta Barbara, and Prof Karen Wooly~s group at Texas A&M University. The silicone sampleswill be purchased by the PI~s group or provided by the North Dakota State University. Themussel adhesive related experiments will be performed with the help of Prof. Jon Wilker~s groupat Purdue University. The PI will be responsible for the overall research design and supervision of the progressof the projects. A graduate student, Mr. Hao Huang, and a postdoctoral fellow, Dr. JoshuaJasensky in the PI~s group will be responsible for conducting experiments and performing dataanalysis. The PI will meet the student and the postdoc every week to discuss about theexperimental data and research plans. They will communicate with all the collaborators (most ofthem are in the ONR Coating/Biofouling program) regularly to design the experiments andinform them of research progress through email and phone conferences. They will also meetother researchers in the ONR Coating/Biofouling program once a year to discuss related researchface to face. These meetings will be arranged at the annual ONR Coating/Biofouling Programreview meeting in June or July.
