Crime in Civil Conflict

Abstract

To conduct micro-level analyses of piracy, other crime and resource extraction, and conflict activity in Nigeria and potentially 2-3 several other countries (tentatively Somalia, Indonesia, and the Philippines). The use of highly disaggregated data is quickly becoming the new standard in conflict research (Cederman and Gleditsch 2009) and its use is helpful in bridging gaps between qualitative and quantitative research. For example, for Nigeria, we will combine data on the precise location and timing of piracy collected in the larger Minerva project with additional local-level indicators of criminal activity we intend to collect from survey responses on crime (Afrobarometer and the CLEEN foundation), localnewspapers, and NGOs monitoring violent criminal activity (Nigeria Watch).
