Designing a Dynamic Platform that Provides Multiple Defense Mechanisms against Fouling

Abstract

The PI will develop a multi-functional coating platform that can be actuated in various modes (e.g. by light or magnetic fields) andconditions to prevent the attachment of marine organisms and their easy removal. It is envisioned that these unique methods of foulingprevention could be enabled through the use of hull grooming vehicles being developed in the ONR program. The PI will coordinateclosely with the simulation/computational efforts of Prof. Balazs at Pittsburgh to form an integrated program of modeling/experimentation.
