Mechanically-Durable and Thermally-Stable Fiber-Bragg-Gratings for Sensing Applications
Abstract
Funds are provided to Dr. Ming Han from the University of Nebraska at Lincoln (UNL), in the amount of $ 97,873.00 as the first and only increment of FY-16 as part of a New 3 year Grant valued at $300,872.00. The Future funding lines are $ 100,266.00 for FY-17 and $ 102,733 for FY-18. Work will be directed at investigating non-linear light absorption phenomena in optical fibers for "Mechanically-Durable and Thermally-Stable Fiber-Bragg-Gratings for Sensing Applications". Some of the research and development activities will include, but not limited to: 1- Developing a model and experimental procedures for evaluation of the mechanical strength and thermal capability, and prediction of the in-service lifetime of fiber optic grating sensors; 2. Establishing an experimental setup for testing the fiber optic grating sensor for mechanical strength; 3. Developing a fabrication method for potentially high-strength gratings, including uniform, phase-shifted, and chirped gratings, using a femtosecond (fs)-laser; 4. Performing mechanical strength tests and in-service lifetime prediction of the fs-laser-fabricated fiber optic gratings sensors; 5. Study the effectiveness of a using pre-compressed grating sensors for lifetime elongation of the sensors in practical applications; and 6. Studying the thermal capability of fs-laser fabricated gratings.
