Coupled Air Sea Processes and EM ducting Research (CASPER)

Abstract

This project is intended as a modeling component of the MURI project entitled ~Coupled Air Sea Processes and EM ducting Research (CASPER)~. The PI of this proposal, Prof. Lian Shen, is a member of the MURI team. We propose to perform a simulation-based study on the transport of moisture and heat in the vicinity of air-sea interface. The goal is to obtain a deep understanding of the fundamental mechanism of humidity and heat fluxes for improved modeling of refractive index for EM (electromagnetic) propagation prediction for Navy applications. The proposed simulations build on the unique computational capabilities developed in the PI~s research group for phase-resolving wave-field evolution and windwave coupling. We aim at elucidating the details of moisture and temperature fields near the sea surface. The proposed simulation will be a useful tool to complement the research efforts led by other MURI team members in their field measurement based studies.
