Crack initiation and crack propagation of marine composites subjected to impact loading under extreme conditions

Abstract

The goal is to investigate how fracture initiates and propagates in conditioned polymeric composites subjected to high strain rate impact experiments to understand if varying levels of water-uptake change the dynamic mode-I and mode-II critical fracture toughness. The dynamic response of navy-relevant carbon fiber/vinyl ester composites samples with single edge notched geometry will be quantified using high-speed digital image correlation techniques and simultaneous strain gage measurements.
