ASEAN SMART GRID CONGRESS 2

Abstract

Electricity is a prime energy for every country in the world as it is used in many aspects of life. It is common knowledge that in these modern times, much of the electricity generated is from fossil and nuclear resources. At the same time, environmental issues play a large role in determining the generation equation. As a consequence, the use of renewable energy (RE) resources, which is actually already in use, is given a new breath for the sustainable generation of electricity. In addition, liberalised generation of electricity is maturing, along with the tremendous advancement of information technology (IT). Coupling the preceding issues and developments, the modern form of electriciy generation is the smart grid (SG). The coming of SG to ASEAN is inevitable. Some universities in Thailand have installed SG systems with solar photovoltaics (PV), batteries and diesel generators. In Malaysia, a utility company is conducting demonstration tests on SG. Whilst other members states have plans on SG implementation. In this context, a platform is needed for information-sharing and exchange of views, thus ASEAN Smart Grid Congress 2015 (ASGC_1) was successfully conducted in Thailand in 2015, with the objectives of introducing and demonstrating a working system. Thus in a follow-up event, the ASEAN Smart Grid Congress 2016 (ASGC_2) acts as a platform to strengthen and address issues related to the way forward such as policy and implementation. ASGC_2 is expected to be a catalyst towards the readiness of parties in ASEAN for the inevitable embrace. ASGC_2 will be organised in Malaysia and hosted by Universiti Teknologi MARA (UiTM), Shah Alam, Selangor over the period of 3 days from 8th to 10th November 2016. The congress and official opening will be held at UiTM. It will then be followed by technical site visits related to SG technology in practice at Bukit Tagar Landfill and Melaka World Solar Farm on the second day of the congress. The main objectives of the conference are as follows. ? Bring together experts, researchers, policy makers and potential users to exchangeknowledge and ideas on economics, technology, policy and other aspects of Smart Grid, featuring field visits and presentations. ? Initiate and maintain efficient cooperative networks among ASEAN countries ? Develop an overall roadmap and implementation plan in moving forward the Smart Grid in ASEAN region.
