A Multiscale Formulation of Damage Initiation and Evolution in Composite Bonded Joints

Abstract

A multiscale modeling approach, bridging microscale response and failure to the structural scale,is proposed for predicting the bond strength and useful life of adhesively bonded compositestructures. A higher-order homogenization/localization scheme will model stress gradients acrossconstituent interfaces and stress concentrations due to defects and inhomogeneity. The models willbe integrated to a FE solver for failure analysis of composite bonded joints. Materialcharacterization and tests will be conducted for model validation and calibration.
