High-Speed Digital Image Correlation (DIC) System for 3D, Non-contact, Optical Measurements

Abstract

A high-speed Digital Image Correlation (DIC) system will be used for research activities thatinclude material characterization at the coupon level, as well as full scale structural tests. NIARconsiders that the addition of a high-speed DIC system to their current capabilities would allowus to support DoD needs when it comes to design and certification of fuel bladders. This DICsystem will provide useful information to effect design changes in terms of the fuel cellconfiguration and/or the material. At the same time, this system will be used to support andvalidate the high fidelity numerical analysis that will be done to support the design andcertification process. In addition to support DoD needs, this system will provide NIAR with thenecessary tools to support additional federal granted research, as well as stated funded andindustry needs. NIAR considers this system to be key to enhancing and improving current andfuture research. By acquiring this system, NIAR will be able to add additional capabilities tosupport a large range of applications including: drop tower testing, ballistic impacts tests, crashsled testing, bird strike testing, and high-speed material testing, from which the DoD would beable to benefit for any of his future research programs. Finally, the acquisition of this systemwould allow hundreds of current university students that work at NIAR to get trained and gainhands on experience. This will result in a better qualified work force who understands thepractical aspects and limitations of DIC systems, as well as numerical models, and theirapplicability for certification purposes.
