Understanding and Predicting Tropical Cyclone Intensification and Structure: TCI Observation Analysis, Assimilation, Sensitivities and Impacts on Model Forecasts

Abstract

Abstract: This proposal addresses the fundamental aim of the Office of Naval Research (ONR) Departmental Research Initiative (DRI): to enhance the science of observing tropical cyclones (TCs) in order to improve the prediction of intensification and structure changes. The TC characteristics, evolution, and outflow configurations will be investigated in a comprehensive manner using innovative new observing systems introduced during the TCI field phase, along with novel satellite observations and state-of-the-science data assimilation and prediction models. Specifically, our study will focus on observational analysis, novel diagnostic methods, and numerical model forecast impacts to address the DRI scientific issues.
