Bubble Entrainment and Transport for Hybrid RANS/LES Methods in Naval Hydrodynamics

Abstract

Hybrid RANS/LES perform better than RANS in bubbly flows, but show grid convergenceproblems for entrainment, breakup and coalescence when more scales are resolved as the grid isrefined. This proposal aims to extend RANS bubble breakup, coalescence and entrainment modelsto hybrid RANS/LES methods. Turbulent and kinematic entrainment, and breakup andcoalescence models will be extended to include modeled and resolved turbulence features. Themodels will be implemented in the code REX, performing verification and validation and largescaledemonstrations for full scale ships.
