Lower Atmosphere Propagation (LATPROP) Measurement System Upgrade
Abstract
Proposed is the upgrade and extension of the Lower Atmospheric Propagation(LATPROP) measurement system that was successfully deployed during the Couple Air SeaProcesses and Electromagnetic ducting Research (CASPER) East Coast Campaign conducted inOctober-November 2015. The previous system was designed to work as an ultra-wide band(UWB) 2-40 GHz system measuring the propagation loss for a ground-to-ground link under nonstandardatmospheric conditions. The current proposal significantly boosts the capabilities of the UWB system by addinghigh gain antennas, power amplifier, low noise amplifiers, RF limiters. In addition, wesynchronize both the transmitter and receiver over high-fidelity GPS-locked oscillator, eliminating the synchronization issues and need for Internet connection or manualsynchronizations that require satellite phone connection when the ship is far out. Moreover thefast synchronization leads to increased data collection rate that enables us to measure morefrequencies. In addition to the UWB subsystem, a modified marine radar is proposed. While the UWBsystem is measuring the propagation loss, the radar will measure sea clutter that will be used inthe spatial and temporal estimation of the atmospheric boundary layer parameters in the regionthe radar operates using refractivity from clutter methods (RFC). For this purpose a commercial25 kW marine radar will be upgraded by high speed analog to digital converter, high qualitylocal oscillator, a redesigned IF section, and a new mechanical front end attached to a large 2.4 mdish that will be needed to get a high gain to do RFC. After the updates, the radar will be a fullycoherent,software-defined marine radar capable of performing RFC.Another subsystem will be the X-band vertical array system upgrade that was also testedduring CASPER East 2015. These upgrades will include new small signal processors at eachreceiver for real time coherent, array measurement.
