One- or Two-Laser Yb Optical Atomic Clock

Abstract

Title: "One- or Two-Laser Yb Optical Atomic Clock"Using concepts of stimulated laser cooling of atoms, our calculations indicate it should be possible to both simplify the design of Yb optical atomic clocks and simultaneously enhance the short-term frequency stability. This proposed research project would complete a detailed theoretical analysis and proof-of-principle experimental demonstrations of concepts of bi-chromatic and multi-chromatic stimulated slowing of Yb atoms. This should enable a single-laser Yb optical atomic ~clock~ (frequency reference) with micro-Kelvin atoms that has good frequency stability and reasonable systematic frequency uncertainties or a two-laser system with outstanding performance.
