Tag Development and Best Practices Workshop

Abstract

This is a proposal to co-organize, with the International Whaling Commission (IWC) and the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), a workshop on cetacean tag development, tag impact assessments and tagging best practices. The workhop will bring together a working group consisting of individuals directly involved in cetacean tag development or follow up studies, and those with experience in cetacean morphology and veterinary medicine, health assessments or other key areas of biotelemetry and bioengineering. This group will review the current state of, and make recommendations for, improvements of tag attachment designs. It will also review studies conducted to assess impacts of tags and identify areas where further studies are needed. Finally, workshop participants will review and provide feedback on a document describing "Cetacean Tagging Best Practice Guidelines", a draft of which will be circulated prior to the meeting.
