Smart Aircraft Conceptual Design Methodology By Defining A Virtual Engineering Multidisciplinary Design Optimization Approach Taking Into Consideratio

Abstract

This proposal lays the foundation of a conceptual design program that will enable the aerospaceindustry to explore various design concepts and new technologies in the virtual environment priorto expending millions of dollars building physical prototypes. This computational tool wouldenable the military, commercial, UAV, and the general aviation industry to explore new innovativeconcepts that will make them more competitive in the global market place. This conceptual design program will be based on what we call ~virtual environment/physics based~approach. A virtual engineering environment provides a user-centered, first-person perspectivethat enables users to interact with an engineered system naturally and provides users with a widerange of accessible tools. It requires an engineering mathematical model that includes thegeometry, physics, and any quantitative or qualitative data from the real system. The user shouldbe able to walk through the system and observe how it works and how it responds to changes indesign, operation, or any other engineering modification. The Aircraft Virtual EngineeringEnvironment will link the inputs from multiple disciplines [aerodynamics, propulsion, structures, controls, systems, human factors, etc.] required to build accurate and predictable systems and fullaircraft mathematical models. The first module developed on this proposal will be for a small fixed wing aircraft configurationin order to be able to verify and validate the algorithms with existing design data for a similaraircraft. Upon the successful completion of the Phase I proposed here, we will proceed to developadditional modules to add this conceptual design capability to several classes of Navy aircrafts.
