Reimagining Thermal Management Systems through Optimal Plant and Control Co-Design

Abstract

Task 1 - Plant and Control Co-Design Algorithm Development Develop an algorithm that can address the following transient features of thermal management systems: (1) transport delays and (2) high frequency load disturbances. Specifically, the PI will incorporate multiple delays into the overall system model and develop strategies for determining the necessary level of model discretization needed to balance the trade-off between model complexity and accuracy with respect to the system dynamics. This will necessitate the development of a mathematical framework that will enable us to pose a nested or iterative co-design optimization problem that includes these features with a relatively simple linear cost function.Task 2 - Hierarchical Objective Function Design The PI will exploit the second law of thermodynamics to design an objective function that can be integrated with the algorithm designed in Task 1 and simultaneously be used to optimize parameter and control decision variables. They will create a co-design algorithm that can simultaneously optimize key plant parameters (e.g. thermal storage capacity, transport lengths) and the control policy with a single exergy destruction minimization (EDM) formulation. The PI will determine how optimization at the subsystem level can influence a more detailed optimization at the component and/or material levels. Task 3 - Optimization Integration across System Architecture The PI will leverage the objective functions defined in Objective 2 to structure the two optimization problems as well as the stopping criteria that will be a function of the specific dynamic performance specifications of interest (e.g. heat dissipation bandwidth up to a specific frequency). For verification and validation, the PI will leverage the 15kW Thermal Management Testbed through the Center for Integrated Thermal Management of Air Vehicles (CITMAV).
